Michael Brown, Principal
Contact MeAbout Mr. Brown
- Teaches 5th-6th English/Language Arts
- B.S. in Elementary Education, University of Dayton
- M.S. in Educational School Leadership, University of Dayton
Qualifications
I attended the University of Dayton and earned my B.S. in Elementary Education, grades K-8, along with a Minor in Social Studies. I then returned to the University of Dayton and earned my M.S. in Educational School Leadership with a focus on Catholic education. Additionally, I hold educator and principal licenses from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. I have served in Catholic education for over 29 years as a teacher and principal.
My Teaching Philosophy
While at the University of Dayton, I was taken by the university's strong Marianist tradition and focus on community. Being a part of and building community within a school/parish is one of the major reasons I have stayed in Catholic education my entire career. Jesus worked tirelessly to bring people together throughout his ministry. I believe that once a community is developed, whether in a classroom or school community, students and families will work together for a common purpose and mission.
Why did I choose to be Principal at St. Joseph School?
Throughout my career, I have worked at various types of Catholic schools. I have learned that my most enjoyable times have been when I have worked in smaller Catholic schools. There is such dedication and commitment to each other in smaller schools, and even though I have only been a part of this community for a short period of time, I can already feel the strong sense of unity within the St. Joe's family.
Fun Facts about Me
This past year I took a sabbatical from being a Catholic school educator and earned my Commercial Drivers License from Waukesha County Technical College. I drove over 80,000 miles, traveling through 30 states. It was a great way to experience many different parts of our country and reflect on my life's past and future endeavors. I also have found a love for writing over the past 10 years and have self-published a few short books online that I have used for retreats and other professional development opportunities.

PreschoolMy Teaching Philosophy
I believe that the foundation of early childhood education begins with a safe, nurturing and engaging environment where children feel valued and respected. Through purposeful play and hands-on activities, children develop social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills that prepare them for success in the future.
Why do I teach at St. Joe's?
I teach at St. Joe's because we provide a warm, faith-filled community where children feel safe, supported and inspired to grow. I value being part of a place where faith and learning are woven together, and where families, teachers and students all work together in partnership.

Natalie Mendenhall, 4K Teacher
PreschoolMy Teaching Philosophy
As a 4K educator, I believe that young children learn best through hands-on experiences, purposeful play, and nurturing relationships. My classroom is a safe, inclusive, and joyful space where every child is seen, heard, and valued. At the heart of my teaching is a belief in the whole-child approach. I focus not only on early academic skills but also on social-emotional development, physical growth, and creative expression. I create developmentally appropriate activities that spark curiosity, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love of learning. Play is the foundation of my classroom. Through play, children make sense of their world, develop language, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. I provide a rich environment filled with materials and opportunities that encourage exploration, imagination, and meaningful discovery. I also believe that strong partnerships with families are essential. Parents are a child’s first teacher, and open communication ensures we are working together to support each child's growth and well-being. Ultimately, my goal is to help children feel safe, supported, and excited to learn, laying a strong foundation for their future success in school and in life.

Why do I teach at St. Joe's?
As a teacher, it is important to me to educate the child in order to prepare them for higher education. I choose to work at a Catholic school because I see the importance of our faith and teaching future generations about it. I love being able to tell the students Bible stories and how it relates to us today. This can be when we are praying throughout the day or collecting food for the food pantry for those in need. Being able to share my faith with others is one of the reasons why I work at a Catholic School. It is very important to me. I attended UWM where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a certification for grades 1-8. Later I continued my education where I received a Master’s degree in Education focusing on Instructional Technology from Cardinal Stritch University. I have been teaching for over twenty years for multiple grades, where I have developed a deep understanding of how students at different grade levels learn.
My Philosophy:
My philosophy revolves around one central point—showing students why they should care about their learning. I want my students to understand with their mind and their relationship with God, they can accomplish goodness. As a teacher, I strive to help my students be the best they can possibly be. It is important to me that all of my students feel valued and loved in my classroom and that each of them knows that they are a child of God. An extension of this is teaching, I ask my students to love one another through the example of Jesus.
Why I Teach at St Joe’s:
I come from a strong Catholic family where growing up my parents sent me to Catholic schools in the Milwaukee, New Berlin and Waukesha areas. After college I decided to continue spreading Jesus’ Word and love through working at different Catholic Schools throughout my career. Jade Hrdi, Middle School Social Studies & Language Arts Teacher

Teaches 5th-8th Social Studies and 7th-8th English/Language Arts; leads 7th Grade Homeroom
My Qualifications
I earned a bachelor's degree in Journalism with a writing emphasis and a minor in religious studies from University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh. Between my sophomore and junior years of college, I joined the US Army Reserve and graduated from the JFK Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I will finish the requirements for a bachelor's degree in Education from University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh in December 2021.
My Teaching Philosophy
I keep my philosophy simple: There's a book for that. A big part of my education has focused on disciplinary literacy, meaning teaching students to read materials the way a professional in that field would. In social studies, we'll read primary sources the way historians do. I hope to show students how great books can change their lives.
In my classroom, students will not be doing the same thing all the time. Rather, students will show their learning of material in a way that makes sense for the subject matter and helps them retain information.
Why do I teach at St. Joe's?
I drove by St. Joe's for three years while I worked nearby, and I thought it would be a great fit for my own children someday. I'm excited about working at St. Joe's because of the small staff with huge experience. Because we're guided by God, and not just text books or state standards, I know that St. Joe's teaching staff truly works for the best of the students' overall holiness, not just academics.
Fun Facts about Me
I spent five years working for one of the winningest weekly newspapers in Wisconsin, and I've earned writing awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association. I wrote a children's book this spring and am looking for an illustrator.
In 2021, I made a goal to check out at least 365 books from the library for my 2-year-old son. I met the goal early in July. The librarians know us pretty well these days!
What Others are Saying about Mrs. Hrdi
"Mrs. Hrdi has become an integral part of our classroom culture and she has worked to help students improve their social studies skills, as well as helping foster curiostiy among our students. Mrs. Hrdi often does research on topics that students bring up in our classroom, and then locates additional materials that may be of interest to them."
Ann Borges, Middle School Science Teacher
My Teaching Philosophy
I want to be able to reach each student in one way or another. Science may not be every student’s thing. Yet, there are so many aspects to learning and teaching science that I know we will find at least one topic for every student. I believe that creativity is necessary in science education. Science requires memorizing technical terms and reading a lot of text. That can be hard for a lot of students. Yet, at the middle school level, it’s the time that we can start showing students to search out and try other ways to incorporate knowledge. I enjoy adding visuals and charts. I encourage the students to draw or sketch the concepts we learn. It is also helpful for students to discuss or teach other students their understanding of subjects.
Why do I teach at St. Joe's?
I teach at St Joe’s because I love Catholic education. I received my Catholic education from St. Peter’s in East Troy along with 2 of my sisters. I sent my daughter to St Peter’s for 5 years before sending her to St Mary’s in Burlington. I also taught at St Peter’s. I always loved the comments that I have heard throughout the years when speaking of my daughter’s or my education. People would say things like “you can always tell which students came from the Catholic school. They are always so polite, they do their homework, and enthusiastic learners.” I just want to be a part of teaching the young how to be good people, while also increasing their excitement for knowledge.
Fun Facts about Me
In high school, I went to state twice for tennis and won 4th place my senior year. I love playing tennis, and taught it to students age 4 to 18 for about 5 years. I have loved science for as long as I can remember, and knew I wanted to go into something with science coming out of high school. I just didn’t know what. I had forgotten, but my mom reminded me when I started this position that I had wanted to be a science teacher. At that time, though, there weren’t jobs open in this area. Since then, I have tried and thought about so many different types of careers. I am so happy that I have come full circle and now I am back to my original plan. But I do not regret any of my experiences because all of them have brought me to St Joe’s.
