MILK JUGS

Starting Monday, we will begin collecting milk jugs to use for the construction of an igloo.  In the past, I have used over 500 jugs for one igloo.  So we need a lot!!!  They need to be the 1 gallon size with caps and of course cleaned as best as you can!  Our goal is to have this many by January, when we return from Christmas vacation.  Thanks!!

Calling All Mystery Readers!!

Grandmas? Grandpas? Aunts? Uncles? Neighbors?  Anyone is eligible!!  Sign up to be a mystery reader...you can visit our classroom on Friday to read a book to our class.  We will try to guess who will be coming in based on clues you provide us with!  Stop in the room or send me an email if you are interested!

Issue 12
Can you believe December is tomorrow!  Wow!  It is true what they say, “Time flies when you are having fun!”  This group is a blast.  They take everything in stride and seem to enjoy themselves no matter what we are doing.  I love my job!
Thanks for all the delicious fruit for our Thanksgiving “feast.”  We had fun singing our songs for our parents and teaching them how to do the Turkey Dance.  The Tom Turkeys were wonderful!  Thanks for taking the time to complete those with your child!  They were so good, everyone earned a special award!  We made Thanksgiving Story Retelling Bracelets.  Each bead represented a part of the story of the pilgrims.  I hope some were able to remember parts of the story!

In reading we have been talking about verbs or action words.  We are really focusing on becoming good speakers in front of a group.  Speaking slowly and clearly so that we can be heard and understood.  I also ask the students to use their smart voice as opposed to a “baby” voice that sometimes shows up when in front of a group!  We read a story about Raccoons in a corn field and talked about the setting and plot of the story!  We paired up and looked at other picture books in order to determine what the setting of each book was.

We were able to watch a small portion of the

school Spelling Bee.  We wanted to try it ourselves…so when we got back to the room we used our Word Wall Words and some other words from the word families we have learned for the contest!  They did a fabulous job!  I was so impressed.  They are really “getting” the concept of stretching out their words and listening for the sounds they hear.

In math, we spent some time with pennies.  We learned another way to say one penny is to say one cent.  During our Calendar time, we have been learning about how to write how many pennies we have by using the ¢ sign as well as how to write the “code date.”  For example today’s code date is 11-30-07.  We learned about matrixes and made them with colored and sized shapes.  A matrix is a graph that can be read across or down and either way you look at it the things in each column or row are the same.  We continued to sequence numbers 1-10 and count forwards and backwards.  We have been counting by 10’s also during calendar time.
In Science, we are discussing habitats and looked online at many different types and saw what types of animals lived in each.

In Religion, we have been talking a lot about the Advent season which begins on Sunday.  We have been talking about how exciting this time is as we WAIT for Jesus’ birthday.  I performed a puppet show for the kids explaining why Baby Jesus is missing from the Nativity scene at this time of year.  The “kid”

in the story thought someone stole him, but her Dad explained that Jesus hadn’t been born yet!  He is born on Christmas day…we looked at that word and noticed that the word Christ is hidden inside it!  We made our own advent wreaths and advent chain, made of loops to tear off each day of Advent.  We also made mangers out of popsicle sticks.  The kids will earn cotton balls to cushion the “bed” for Baby Jesus if they stay on green!  Feel free to continue this during those few days at home before Christmas!  The more the better!
We will also have a Jesse Tree in the room!

I hope everyone noticed the writing paper at the very back of your child’s F.R.O.G. Book.  This is to be used for Homework!  I am ordering some paper with wider lines…this is all we had left in the room.  Please help remind your child to use that paper…or if you have your own lined paper, please continue to use that.

Just a heads up, Kindergarten will be presenting the Mass on December 21st…so we

will begin practicing and preparing as early as next week.  Please watch for readings, etc. to come home for practice!
Please notice the change in Student of the Week dates in your child’s F.R.O.G. Book.
Send in Letter Nn items for the Sound Muncher next week and for Show-n-Tell!

ALSO!!  It is time for December SNACKS!
Have a Blessed Weekend!  Mrs. K
