WELCOME TO SIXTH GRADE!
F. R. O. G. (FULLY RELY ON GOD!) In addition to our sixth grade classroom motto F.R.O.G. (Fully Rely On God), this year's school theme is "Our Search for God's Treasures". As a treasure of God, we can find treasure in our words, in our actions and in our thoughts. We are all treasures and our students will spend the year discovering vast treasures in others, as well as in themselves! Sixth grade is an exciting year where students take on more responsibility and continue to grow both academically, spiritually and personally. One particularly exciting area is in religion, where we begin to study the Old Testament. We will read the story of our ancestors in faith—the Hebrew people. Catholics study this heritage because it is so closely linked to our own. Learning about the faith of these first believers is a good way to understand the foundations of our own faith. We'll learn how God saved the Hebrew people from slavery; and study the connections between the Passover and Jesus’ death, Resurrection, and Ascension. Then, we will learn how the Hebrew nation came together under the leadership of its judges and kings and how the Hebrews built a great temple to gather for worship. We also learn that the Israelites turned away from God and were forced to leave their homeland and finally discover that God was with them wherever they went and was always ready to welcome them back. In the same way, we will discover ways that Jesus guides us back to God. Finally, we will learn that Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promise of a messiah and learn more about John the Baptizer. We will also see how the sacraments strengthen our faith, and earn how to pray as Jesus did.
