2007 Topic - "A Great American Leader":
The 2007 topic is "A great American leader." Whether reading today's newspapers or yesterday's history books, people agree America's greatness is the product of many great leaders. For this contest, students are asked to prepare and deliver a speech about one person who stands out as a particularly great American leader.
Students may select a great leader who is living or dead. They may select someone born here or abroad. To help students begin their brainstorming, ask them to consider presidents and other elected officials, first ladies, leaders of industry, Native American chiefs, religious leaders and activitists, military leaders, local leaders in their community, and others.
After selecting a great leader to profile, the students may want to include: - Information about the leader's life
- Traits of leadership he/she possessed
- How the influence of his/her leadership is felt today
Judging criteria:
Contestants will be judged using the following 100-point system
40 points for material organization
This accounts for theme and subject adherence, structure, content, logic and color.
40 points for delivery and presentation
This includes voice, pronunciation, enunciation, gestures and poise.
20 points for overall effectiveness
This scores impression and effect.
